Mumbai Under Orange Alert as Heavy Rain Triggers Waterlogging, Tree Falls and Civic Emergencies Across the City
Mumbai remained under an orange alert as heavy rainfall caused widespread waterlogging, tree falls, electrical short circuits, and structural collapse incidents across the city. The IMD has warned of continued heavy to extremely heavy rain until July 6, while railway services and road traffic continued to function despite the severe weather conditions.
According to the IMD, an orange alert indicates rainfall ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period. During the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Friday, Santacruz, the city's base weather station, recorded 101 mm of rainfall, while Colaba received 111.8 mm.
The heavy rainfall resulted in temporary waterlogging at several locations across Mumbai, including Sakkar Panchayat, National Old Market, Gandhi Market, Mahalaxmi Junction, Noor-E-Ilahi Masjid in Chembur, Sakinaka, Welcome Hotel in Ghatkopar, and the Andheri subway. Civic officials immediately deployed dewatering pumps and manual workers to clear inundated roads and restore normal movement.
The continuous downpour also led to numerous civic incidents across the city. Authorities received 121 complaints related to fallen trees and branches. In addition, 29 incidents of electrical short circuits and ten cases of wall or house collapses were reported from different parts of Mumbai.
The IMD has placed Mumbai under an orange alert until July 6, warning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across the city. For Friday, the weather department forecast spells of rain over Mumbai and its suburbs, with heavy to very heavy showers at several locations and the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour are also expected, while the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 27 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The weather department has further predicted very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Mumbai on Saturday, indicating that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist over the coming days.
Despite the intense rainfall and multiple incidents reported across the city, services on the Central Railway and Western Railway networks continued without disruption on Friday morning. Road traffic also remained largely smooth, reflecting the coordinated response of civic authorities as Mumbai continued to face another phase of the active monsoon season under heightened weather warnings.
